What Are the Signs a House Needs Rewiring?

A few things reliably point to wiring that's reaching the end of its life. Sockets that feel warm or look scorched, lights that flicker or dim when the kettle or shower goes on, a fuse board with old rewireable fuses rather than switches, and cables sheathed in rubber or fabric rather than modern PVC are all worth a proper look. So is a house with very few sockets per room, or one that trips repeatedly for no obvious reason. None of these on its own proves you need a full rewire, and plenty of homes only need a partial one or a fuse box upgrade instead, but together they tell you the installation is overdue an honest assessment.

We rewire homes right across the North East, from the older terraces around Westoe and Horsley Hill in South Shields to the Victorian streets of Jesmond and Heaton in Newcastle and the Fulwell and Southwick rows in Sunderland, so we know what tends to be hiding behind the plaster in a house of a given age. We're NAPIT registered, City & Guilds qualified and DBS checked with 14 years behind us, and we'll always tell you straight whether a full rewire, a partial one or a simple upgrade is the right call. Every finished rewire is tested, certified and notified to Building Control, and you get a free fixed written quote before a single cable is lifted.

Know what to look for

Warm or discoloured sockets, flickering lights, rewireable fuses and rubber or fabric cable are the signs worth having checked.

Not always the whole house

Sometimes a partial rewire or a fuse box upgrade is all that's needed, and we'll never talk you into more than the job requires.

Certified and notified

Every completed rewire is tested, certified and notified to Building Control through our NAPIT registration.

Your questions, answered

I've spotted a couple of these signs. How urgent is it?

It depends which signs. Warm or scorched sockets and a burning smell want looking at quickly, as they point to heat at a connection. Flickering lights or an old fuse board are less urgent but still worth checking. The safe move is to have the installation assessed rather than wait and wonder.

Does the whole house always need doing?

No. Many homes only need a partial rewire, a new fuse box or a handful of circuits brought up to standard. We inspect first and give you an honest view, and we never recommend a full rewire you don't need.

How can I be certain before committing to the work?

An electrical safety check (an EICR) is the definitive answer: it inspects and tests the whole installation and tells you exactly what's safe, what needs attention and whether a rewire is genuinely warranted. We can carry one out and talk you through the findings in plain English.
