A new town built round old villages
Washington became a new town in 1964. Planners laid it out as a set of villages. Today it has 18 of them, from Albany and Blackfell to Oxclose, Rickleton and Teal Farm. The town grew from about 53,000 people in 2001 to about 67,000 in 2011.
Some of those villages are far older than the new town. Washington Village is the old township. Barmston, Biddick and Usworth are old townships too. Washington Old Hall is a stone manor house from the early 1600s. Washington Village is the town's only conservation area.
Many homes here were built in the new town years from the 1960s on. Houses that age may still have an older fuse board. Some have wiring that has not had a full test in a long time.
Work shapes the town too. The Nissan plant opened on the old Usworth airfield in 1986. The IAMP business park is growing next to it. Washington also has ten industrial estates.
